Betanzos
Betanzos is in the la Coruna province of Galicia and it is definitely one of the region’s most compelling and interesting towns. If you are based in la Coruna, ferrol or Santiago de Compostela it is worth considering for a day trip. It has a number of other smaller towns close to it.
Some general information about Noia
Betanzos has a number of interesting areas. Firstly it has a river running through it, secondly it has what was once a walled medieval town that is built on a hill, and finally it has a large square or plaza.
It takes some time to fully explore Betanzos and if there is a festival like the medieval or river boat fiestas, then you can happily spend a day there. The town is well catered for with tourist outposts.
What to see and do in Betanzos
- Tip 1. Explore the old monumental district of the town. Most of this zone is built on a hill and there is even an old stone gateway entrance through the original town wall at one end.
This part of Betanzos has a number of old churches plus some other buildings of not and once you reach the highest point of the town you can descend to the alameda on the other side.
Tip 2. Walk around the town’s large open plaza. It is surrounded by cafes and places of interest and you will find a good sized tourist office in one of its buildings.
Tip 3. There is a major boat festival held annually in Betanzos and this event draws lots of tourists and is very colourful. If you happen to be in Galicia when this event takes place you should make the effort to see it.
Tip 4. Betanzos is one of several Galician towns that host a multi day medieval festival. This event is a fairly modern creation, but it sees the town’s buildings and many of its residents dressed in medieval trappings and attire. It is probably the best type of fiesta to witness from a tourism perspective.
Tip 5. After all of the walking you will already have done, sit down and enjoy some tapas. The town has several good (and good value) tapas bars located around the main plaza.
Where is Betanzos and how do you reach it
Arriving by car, Betanzos is quite well signposted once you are in the general area. Parking is available, but you may need to drive around at busy times.
If you are based in northern la Coruna province and you want a single local town to explore, Betanzos is probably the best one.
