Melide

Melide is an average sized town close to Galicia's coast with a strong agricultural background. The town hosts a large summer festival in August with party goers travelling from all of the neighbouring towns and villages for the festivities.

General information about Melide

Melide has a history dating back to the tenth century and was known as one of the towns found on the Way of Saint James pilgrimage.

Today the municipality of Melide has a population of less then 10,000 people and many of those are employed on the land. The town has a couple of old streets that appear to date back to medieval times and there is an old bridge and an ancient church with an ornate portico.

Melide is more of a place to visit in order to break up a journey rather than as an ultimate destination in itself.

What to see and do in the town of Melide

Tip 1. The church with its detailed and ornate portico and atmospheric interior.

Tip 2. The old brige which is assumed to be medieval in origin and construction.

Tip 3. THe big summer festival. Melide is the central point for a number of much smaller villages and many of the inhabitants of these localities arrive for the festival which runs into the early hours of the following morning.

Getting to Melide

Melide can be reached off the AC-840 road that travels from la Coruna province in to Lugo province. The road literally goes through the town. As a result, it is a destination that you may wish to take refreshments at if you are journeying to or from Lugo city.
