The former fishing town of Muros
Muros is a popular town on the Galician coast in the rias baixas (lower bays) area of the region and has a port, an old town and a weekly market. It is popular with visitors and is always busy, particularly in the summer months.
General information about Muros
Once a deep water fishing port, Muros is now frequented by tourists, yet actively retains some of its fishing heritage.
The town is set at the opening of the Muros and Noia bay or estuary (ria) and is surrounded by mountainous hills that shadow the town. Muros has a long history and the older parts of the town are tiered into the hills beyond the coastline with numerous narrow streets, small shops and terraced houses. The fishing port is still used and catches are brought in daily.
What to see in the town of Muros
-
Tip 1. The harbour area, with a port and promenade, is the first thing you see on arrival at Muros.
There are numerous bars, shops and restaurants lining the main road that bisects the sea and town centre and all the inner streets are very narrow. It is a great little town to explore and in which to get something to eat or drink.
Tip 2. The weekly market is well known throughout the area and sells everything from fruit and veg to keep sakes, pottery and clothing. There is also an old indoor market that trades every day.
Tip 3. Unusually the main plaza is not at the centre, but rather at the seafront and it is here that you can see the small but well proportioned town hall building.
The main plaza has a a statue which can be seen to the left as well as a small fountain.
Tip 4. Just walking around Muros and up the narrow terraced streets of the old town is the best way to see and enjoy Muros. Houses and shops intermingle and there are always people running around. If you walk to the very top of the town you will pass an old church and from there you will get some excellent views looking across the ria.
Tip 5. There is a famous horreo or granery (a long stone built grain store, typical of the Galician region) close to Muros. It is one of the largest in Galicia and is a short drive away.
Getting to Muros and its bay area
It takes a good hour or more to reach Muros from Santiago de Compostela by car, but the journey takes you through some impressive scenery, both inland and coastal, and the time passes quickly.
Muros is not really a destination from which to base a holiday, but more of a day's outing during which it may be one of two or three different towns that you visit. This part of the coast has numerous towns and villages of varying sizes and tourist interest, but most tourists rate Muros highly.
