Car rental in Galicia
Renting a car in Galicia is something that you should consider essential unless you are only taking a short break and are based in the city of Santiago de Compostela or, possibly, Pontevedra.
A car will not of course be a requirement for anyone planning to walk the Camino de Santiago, however having luggage forwarded on is something that many "modern day" pilgrims now take for granted.
The main national and international car rental companies offering airport pick-up and drop-off in Galicia are -
Holiday Autos - Affordable car rental in Spain
Car Rentals - Car hire in Spain
Record Rent a Car - Car rental in Galicia
Sixt Rent a Car - car rental in Northern Spain
Hertz Car Rental - Hire a car in Northern Spain
If you click on any of the links above you will be taken to the website of the company in question from which you can select your rental dates, class of car, and collection and drop-off points.
Why do you need a car
Galicia is a region that needs to be explored and to have any chance of doing this properly you will need a vehicle. This is because many of the places that you will want to see are not well serviced by buses and very few have train services and train stations.
Having a car gives you the freedom and flexibility to go where you want when you want and if you like somewhere you can easily return there the next day. Another very important reason for renting a car is to make the most of Galicia’s stunning scenery. Many of the roads, both coastal and inland, offer spectacular drives and for many this is one of the pleasures of a Galician vacation.
A hire car will also give you the opportunity to visit those "off the beaten tack" places and Galicia has lots of them. Ultimately, if you really want to see, experience and immerse yourself in everything that Galicia has to offer, you will need to be mobile and renting a car is the best option.
If, for whatever reason, you do not want to hire a rental car, then the other option available to those wishing to see more of Galicia is to go on a tour of the region. If this is the case take a look at our Organised Tours page.
